Lemon water can destroy your teeth! Here’s how to protect yourself

Many people consume lemon water on awakening as part of a diet, detoxification or simply to stimulate digestive enzymes. Although drinking lemon water in the morning is the new healthy trend, this routine can be harmful to your teeth and cause tooth enamel erosion.

Lemon water can destroy your teeth

In this article, we explain how lemon water can cause tooth erosion and offer a list of tips for protecting your teeth. But before, let’s do a little reminder of some benefits of lemon water:

A real source of vitamin C

Vitamin C contained in lemon, can reduce your risk of  cardiovascular disease and  stroke , as well as your blood pressure. The juice of a lemon provides about 18.6 milligrams of vitamin C which is a good portion since the recommended daily amount for adults is 65 to 90 milligrams.

Prevents wrinkles

Vitamin C found in lemons can help reduce skin wrinkles, prevent premature aging, and protect against sun damage. A  2016 laboratory study  showed that a citrus-based drink prevented the appearance of wrinkles in hairless mice.

Eliminates kidney stones

Lemon contains citric acid that can help  prevent kidney stones . Citrate, a component of citric acid, decreases the acidity of urine and can even break small stones.

Refresh the breath

You can control bad breath by drinking a glass of lemon water after meals and at the first hour upon waking. Indeed, lemon stimulates saliva and prevents dry mouth, which can cause bad breath caused by bacteria.

Does lemon water in the morning cause irreversible damage to the teeth?

Erosion is the loss of  tooth enamel most often caused by an acid attack. Over time, the usual consumption of lemon juice on the teeth may cause erosion of the enamel, possibly exposing the lower layer called dentin. The latter is located under the enamel at the visible part of the tooth, and serves as a cover of the dental pulp (cells of the dental tissue).

Lemon water can cause tooth erosion

Although lemon water is beneficial to health, it should be emphasized that when it is consumed daily, it can lead to a risk  of erosion of the teeth , since the lemon contains a Ph between 2 and 3 and its acid can be dangerous for tooth enamel.

Also, it would be wise to consume this drink with a straw and rinse your mouth thoroughly after you have finished drinking it.

What is the impact of erosion on your teeth?

· Changing the color of your teeth: As your teeth erode, your enamel becomes thinner and your dentin becomes more visible, giving your teeth a darker appearance.

· Sensitivity: You may also feel  dental sensitivity  to cold foods, cold, hot drinks, and sometimes even the sensation of air passing through your mouth.

· Dental necrosis: this is the premature destruction of the dental pulp.

What you need to do to prevent tooth erosion

Dental erosion can cause serious damage to your teeth, but it can also and fortunately be avoided. We offer easy-to-follow tips to protect you:

· After eating or drinking acidic foods or drinks, rinse your mouth with water to neutralize the acidity level.

· Wait at least half an hour before brushing your teeth after eating acidic foods or drinks, as they soften the email and make it more susceptible to brushing damage.

· According to one  study , chewing a sugar-free chewing gum helps reduce the amount of acid in your mouth by helping you produce more saliva that eliminates bacteria through its enzyme and protein content. It is a good solution to join the useful to the pleasant. But beware, chewing gum is in no way a substitute for brushing.

· Remember to drink water: It will always be your best friend to prevent dry mouth and get rid of bacteria.

· Use a soft-bristled toothbrush that is less aggressive to the email and gum, and brush your teeth gently. Learn to take pleasure in brushing your teeth ( take your time  and do it gently).

Warning: It is not recommended to take lemon in case of kidney and biliary disorders, burns or stomach ulcers, and in case of citrus allergies.
